FROM LOFT TO LEGACY: A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
FROM LOFT TO LEGACY: A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE
As the team celebrates two decades in business, we sat down with founder and CEO James Chaytor for a proper walk down memory lane.
From being one of the first pioneers of mobile interaction design to paving the way in UX-UI for the games industry’s biggest players, we revisit the early days of Sprung Studios, along with the memories and milestones that shaped our 20-year journey.

It feels like just yesterday I was sweating it out in a tiny loft room in my house, working alone on design guidelines for Orange and Vodafone, being interrupted by my one-year-old daughter. The summer heat wasn’t just a metaphor back then—it was literal.
If you’d told me then that one day we’d be a global leader in UX/UI design for video games, I might’ve laughed (or cried from exhaustion).
The early days were a mix of chaos and caffeine. Moving to a small office near Brighton Station and hiring my first team felt monumental. Sure, my vacations were more of a myth than reality for over a decade — I was always checking in — but the energy and passion of our team kept them going strong.
And when we pivoted to video games? Designing entire game interfaces in just months was intense, but Friday pub nights and marathon Christmas Party pub crawls kept us sane.

We took the leap across the pond to Vancouver. Starting up there was like reliving those scrappy early days in Brighton—except now with jet lag and Canadian Immigration! But we found our rhythm, expanded our services into motion, engineering, and user research, and built something truly special.
Running a business isn’t like driving a train on tracks; it’s more like tending a garden—constant care, adaptability, and the occasional surprise storm. But here we are, two decades in, with an incredible team and unmatched industry reputation.
To everyone who’s been part of this journey — thank you! You’ve made this ride unforgettable. Here’s to the next 20 years of creativity, collaboration, and taking actual vacations!
